Best Stockport Swimming Pool (2024)

As a parent and former competitive swimmer, I understand the importance of finding the right swimming lessons for our children. The excitement of embarking on this aquatic journey is often met with a swirl of questions: What are the best Stockport Swimming Pools? How do the classes operate? What about the costs? We’ve written an in depth review of our experiences of signing up to swimming lessons through Stockport Life Leisure after our daughter started swimming there at the start of 2023.

These questions became even more pertinent for me, given my own swimming background, when our daughter expressed her desire to start swimming lessons with Stockport Life Leisure. While my glory days in the pool might be a fond memory, the legacy of a great swimming facility, like Stockport Grand Central (the home of Stockport Metro), is timeless.

Known for its exceptional standards since the 1970s and boasting numerous international-level swimmers, Stockport Metro, along with Stockport Life Leisure, offers a glimpse into a world-class swimming training environment. This listicle aims to navigate you through the myriad of options for family-friendly swimming lessons in Stockport, providing insights into what we believe are the best pools for your budding swimmers and what makes each unique – ensuring you make a splash in choosing the right pool for your family.

Where Are the Best Swimming Pools in Stockport?

  • Avondale Life Leisure, Heathbank Rd, Cheadle Heath, Stockport SK3 0UP
  • Romiley Life Leisure, Hole House Fold, Romiley, Stockport SK6 4BB
  • Stockport Grand Central, Grand Central Square, Wellington Rd S, Stockport SK1 3TA

Stockport Grand Central

  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm / Saturday – Sunday 8am – 6pm
  • Pool Temperature: Grand Central Main – 27.8° / Grand Central Oasis – 30.5°
  • Small / Junior Pool: Yes
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
  • Changing Room Facilities: Unisex changing with cubicles and lockers.

What’s Hot: Diving into Excellent Facilities

If you want a spa, small children’s area with play activities, dive, flumes or just space to put in the laps, this is the Life Leisure for you! The main pool is on the chilly side and it does take a good few minutes to adjust – not surprising, given that this is THE home of Stockport Metro but this is the pool that has it all!

What’s Not: Disgusting Changing Facilities

Despite all of the above, we hardly come to Stockport Grand Central. This is solely because of the state of the changing rooms. Many of the lockers don’t work (and likewise the locks on the change cubicles) and it’s not unusual to encounter a nappy, disused plaster etc.

Our Rating: 6/10

Avondale Pool

  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm / Saturday – Sunday 8am – 6pm
  • Pool Temperature: 29.5°
  • Small / Junior Pool: No
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
  • Changing Room Facilities: Unisex cubicles with a good mix of single and family units (likewise with showers). Regularly cleaned by the staff and we’ve never found items such as nappies etc. Lockers are available (take £1 coin).

What’s Hot: Making a Splash With The Viewing Room

With the recent refurbishment of Hazel Grove Life Leisure, we were relocated to Avondale for swimming lessons. We’ve loved it for the four months we were there. In particular, I love it because there’s a great aerial viewing room to be able to watch her swim. The changing rooms have always been particularly clean and well looked after.

What’s Not: Floundering With Limited Parking

Although the car park is relatively large, there’s a lot of other activities regularly taking place – football on the astro, exercise classes, basketball. This can make it challenging to find a space! On top of that, the parking especially around by the astro pitches is quite narrow – not ideal for the less confident driver!

Our Rating: 8/10

Hazel Grove Swimming Pool

  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm / Saturday – Sunday 8am – 6pm
  • Pool Temperature: Main Pool: 28.5° / Small Pool – 30.5°
  • Small / Junior Pool: Yes
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
  • Changing Room Facilities: Unisex cubicles with a good mix of single and family units (likewise with showers). Regularly cleaned albeit a little dated!

What’s Hot: Butterflying into Family-Friendly Fun

We’ve got especially fond memories of Hazel Grove Pool as it’s where we took the kids when babies to their first swimming sessions! All Life Leisure centres run a number of baby and toddler classes, but this is where we first came and where our memories will forever be!

What’s Not: Limited Visibility

There’s not really anything to dislike when it comes to Hazel Grove Swimming Pool. The main thing that puts me off is the fact that a number of the more junior swimming lessons take place in the small pool. Great for the kids as the water is warm, however you’re not able to see the kids from the side of the main pool (which is the seating area for the pool).

Our Rating: 7/10

Cheadle Hulme Swimming Pool

  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm / Saturday – Sunday 8am – 6pm
  • Pool Temperature: Main Pool: 28.5° / Small Pool – 30.5°
  • Small / Junior Pool: Yes
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
  • Changing Room Facilities: Unisex cubicles with a good mix of single and family units (likewise with showers). Modern and clean facilities

What’s Hot: All Round Freestyler

We love Cheadle Hulme pool, great parking, great changing facilities, both a small pool and main pool good location for other activities – you can even make a day out of it and head to Bruntwood Park later before heading to Bramhall for dinner in one of the many fabulous restaurants or cafes!

Cheadle Life Leisure: Our best Stockport swimming pool?

What’s Not: Nothing To Read Here

There really is nothing that we can say to fault Cheadle Hulme!

Our Rating: 9/10

Romiley Leisure Centre

Disclaimer: We’ve not swum at Romiley Swimming Pool since August 2020. When we visited they were doing a huge refurbishment of the changing rooms and facilities. For that reason we haven’t provided a write up of the pool! This will have to be our Christmas holiday assignment, so do come back soon once we’ve given it a thorough ‘kids test’!

  • Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 7am – 10pm / Saturday – Sunday 8am – 6pm
  • Pool Temperature: Main Pool: 28.5° / Small Pool – 30.5°
  • Small / Junior Pool: Yes
  • Wheelchair Accessible: Yes
  • Changing Room Facilities: We can’t comment on this yet as we’ve not been since it was refurbished (See disclaimer above)
